Google Hangouts On Air

This assignment will familiarize you with Google Hangouts on Air and give you a taste of synchronous, remote (at the same time) collaboration.

Arrange to hang out with your group at a pre-arranged time. Choose one person to initiate the hangout and invite the other participants. He or she will need everyone's Google Plus name and/or their email address. Be sure the initiator has a computer with a camera and microphone and a YouTube account.

If you do not have a computer with a camera, you can still join the hangout and be heard. If you do not have either a microphone or camera, you can participate over the phone. In that case, the person initiating the hangout will need your phone number.

If someone is missing after a few minutes, give them a call. If they don't answer or join, blow them off.

When the hangout starts, it is not "on air" -- not being broadcast and recorded. Use that time to chat and make any adjustments you need.

When you are ready to go on air, the initiator should print a screenshot showing the participants.

Next, go "on air" and hold short a short discussion of some topic related to this class. If you can't agree on a topic, discuss the way we might use Google Hangouts On Air in our class.

When you are finished with your discussion, the initiator should stop recording. You will still be able to talk to each other, but it will not be recorded. Participants can hang up or keep talking.

When the initiator hangs up, the recorded part of the session will be rendered and posted to YouTube a minute or two later.

The initiator should post a short description of the recorded discussion along with a link to the video on Youtube in our CIS 275 class community on Google Plus. Be sure to put it under the Team Hangouts category.

I am only asking you to submit one video of one Hangout, but, if I were you, I would let every team member who wants the experience initiate a Hangout.

1. Where did I go to college?
2. What is the topic of my most recent Google Plus post
3. Which nations have I lived in?
4. What is the title of the picture at the top of my profile?
5. What is the bragging right listed on my profile?
6. How many Google Plus members are named Christopher Press?
7. How did you find out?

Print the answers to the above questions to turn in.

Play with Google Plus

This assignment will introduce you to Google Plus and working together with classmates.

Before you do this assignment, complete the prerequisite assignment, in which you will open a Google Plus account, create your profile and add a link to the profile to our class roster.

In your new account, create a circle for our class and add me (+larry press) and your teammate(s).

Create at least one post and share it with your circle.

Add a comment to one of the messages posted by a teammate.

Each team member should print and turn in screenshots of the following:

1. Your team circle showing your teammates.
2. A copy of a post you made.
3. A copy of someone else's post along with a comment you made on it.

Staple these together to turn in and write your name and your team number on the front.
